An Iowan was charged Wednesday on suspicion of murdering a former romantic partner and transporting her body in southern Minnesota, according to Hennepin County court documents.

On Saturday morning, police arrived at the scene of a single-vehicle car crash in Olmsted County. They found the driver of the vehicle, Margot Lewis, 32, seated on a lawn chair in the median of Interstate 90 by the exit to Highway 42 near Eyota, according to the charges.

Two people who stopped to offer help told police they saw a dead person in the back seat. The deputies determined the person was not killed in the car crash. She was wrapped in bedding, a mattress, and covered in a tarp, with a puncture wound on her neck and she was cold to the touch.

The victim — identified by Olmsted County officials as 35-year-old Liara Tsai — was the owner of the car.

LGBTQ advocacy organization OutFront Minnesota shared a statement about Tsai, saying she was a DJ, producer, crisis counselor and a “beloved member of the trans community in Minnesota.”

An autopsy found Tsai died from multiple sharp-force injuries.

A Milwaukee father is heartbroken after recently suffering immeasurable losses, including the death of his 31-year-old daughter, Chyna Long, a Black trans woman who was shot and killed last weekend.

Jonathan Long said Chyna was born JaQuez Long in Milwaukee on March 30, 1992. She had been a resident of Chicago for about the last eight years, but Jonathan said she was in town to provide her father comfort as he had been dealing with the death of his brother.

Jonathan, 49, said he and Chyna had a special relationship and they helped each other grow. He said, "Her biggest fear was not being accepted by her family."

Chyna told her dad when she turned 18 that she was gay, but her father said she later identified as transgender starting at about 23 years old.

Jonathan knew his child was queer since around age 7, but it was new territory for Jonathan when she began identifying as a woman and preferred to be called Chyna instead of Quez. So, he made it his life's mission to educate himself and ensure his child could live her truth.

A Portland man faces attempted murder and hate crimes charges after prosecutors accused him of bursting into a rage and beating a transgender woman so severely that responding officers couldn’t distinguish the woman’s features.

Worth M. Briggs IV, 55, used a slur targeting the woman’s gender identity while inflicting the beating May 11 inside a Southwest Portland home, according to a probable cause affidavit.

An Oregon killer smirked as the grieving family of the cabbie they fatally stabbed spoke in court, while they refused to take responsibility for last year’s Easter Sunday tragedy.

Moses J. Lopez, 30, who identifies as transgender, was sentenced to 22 years in prison on Wednesday for the fatal stabbing of 43-year-old Reese Lawhon, a driver for Radio Cab in Portland.

Lopez had pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon in exchange for Circuit Judge Heidi Moawad giving the 22-year sentence — a lesser penalty compared to the original second-degree murder charge Lopez initially faced.

Lawhon had picked up and driven Lopez to an area underneath a highway overpass in East Portland just after 6:40 p.m. April 9, 2023 after being given the wrong address to Lopez’s apartment, according to The Oregonian.

Lopez, a certified nursing assistant at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in North Portland, had been partying in downtown Portland when things got “bad,” prompting Lopez to call 911 looking for a ride home.

The 911 dispatcher told the eventual killer to call a cab, but the Radio Cab dispatcher had allegedly put in the wrong destination address, Lopez told the court during Wednesday’s sentencing hearing.

When Lawhon arrived, Lopez confirmed the destination to be Southeast Third Avenue and Washington Street, only to give a different address upon arrival, the newspaper reported, citing a video from inside the cab.

As the cab pulled up to the wrong location, Lawhon realized the mistake and began driving to the correct location, when Lopez reached out from the backseat and stabbed him, read a bail memo based on the cab’s camera footage and obtained by The Oregonian.

A private ambulance crew based by the cab at the time of the stabbing saw a person, in bloody clothing, get out of the cab and drop a pair of brass knuckles with an attached blade, the newspaper previously reported, citing a probable cause affidavit.

Police found Lawhon dead inside the cab with two stab wounds to his neck.

“I ended up in a very scary part of town where I was genuinely afraid,” Lopez said Wednesday. “I refuse to apologize for the lack of help that I so desperately needed.”

Lopez addressed Lawhon’s family but still fell short of apologizing for the murder.

They say they are being targeted by anti-trans legislation and are concerned about an uptick in violence directed at them. As a result, advocates worry about what they see as a growing threat to transgender health.

Gov. Tony Evers made good on a promise to veto a Republican bill aimed at banning students born biologically male from playing on K-12 female sports teams.

In his veto message Tuesday, the Democratic governor accused Republicans of perpetuating “hateful and discriminatory rhetoric,” while a GOP lawmaker accused Evers of standing “AGAINST women.”

The bill was backed by Republicans who argued the state must step in to protect women’s school sports, saying biological differences between male and female bodies can create an unfair situation for players.

MINNEAPOLIS — Members of Minnesota's Queer Legislative Caucus and the Hennepin County Attorney are speaking out in the wake of a 38-year-old transgender woman's shooting death, which is now being investigated as murder.

Earlier this week, 25-year-old Damarean Bible was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Savannah Williams. She was found Nov. 29 with a gunshot wound to the head in a south Minneapolis courtyard just south of East Lake Street.

The criminal complaint states officers at the scene noticed gunshot residue on the hood of her sweatshirt, which means she was shot at point-blank range.

On Wednesday, the Queer Legislative Caucus issued the following statement:

"We stand in collective grief and outrage at the senseless murder of Savannah Ryan Williams, a 38-year-old transgender woman brutally taken from our community. This heinous act of violence not only extinguishes a vibrant life but serves as a stark reminder of the dangers and discrimination faced by sex workers and transgender individuals, particularly BIPOC transgender women, and femmes.

Criminal complaint details
Witnesses told police they heard a gunshot in the area at about 5:45 a.m., the charges state. Surveillance camera footage showed two people walk into the area at 5 a.m., but only one was shown walking out around the time the gunshot was heard. Police then used more surveillance footage to track the suspect to a downtown apartment building, where management identified him as Bible, according to the complaint.

After getting a search warrant, officers waited until they saw Bible leave the building, and he was taken into custody. The complaint states Bible called his parents in the Hennepin County Jail, where he told his father that he "just murdered someone," and he felt sorry for killing the victim, but he "had to do it."

Police in Oregon are investigating the killing of a transgender woman who was fatally stabbed at a vigil for a murder victim Tuesday night.

Aja Raquell Rhone-Spears, 33, was attending the vigil of murder victim Tyrell Penney when she and one other person were stabbed, according to a Portland police statement. The vigil, which was held near the 15800 block of Southeast Division, moved to a home with 20 to 30 people in attendance, including Rhone-Spears.

It was at the residence that a “large disturbance occurred involving multiple participants," leaving Rhone-Spears, who was also known as Rocky Rhones, and one other person injured from stab wounds, police said in a statement, Out magazine reports. First responders attempted life-saving procedures on Rhone-Spears but she was declared dead at the scene, and her death was later ruled a homicide.

Police said in the statement that despite "multiple witnesses" being present, they "encountered hostility and a lack of cooperation." No arrests have been made.

At least three transgender women — Brazil Johnson, Regina Allen and now Cashay Henderson — have been killed in Milwaukee in the last nine months, and the murders are leading to worries about violence against people in the LGBTQ+ community.

Just days after the murder of Cashay Henderson, members of the trans community called for change during a vigil for the 33-year-old woman.

“We want to keep our trans women protected. We want to keep them safe,” Aaleh Hughes said during the vigil.

Minnesota State Rep. Leigh Finke on Thursday called anti-trans violence an “epidemic” after a transgender woman was found dead by a Minneapolis light rail station, with a gunshot wound to the head.

Damarean Bible, 25, was charged with second-degree murder following the Nov. 29 discovery of slain 38-year-old Savannah Williams, according to jail records reviewed by HuffPost.

A probable cause statement obtained by HuffPost said that Minneapolis police had responded to a report of an unresponsive person in a courtyard.

Witnesses told police that they heard shooting at around 5:45 a.m. Surveillance footage showed Williams and man later identified as Bible near the area just before the shooting took place, according to police.

Bible was seen walking out of the courtyard alone, police added.

He was arrested at his apartment and taken to jail, where he called his father and allegedly confessed to killing Williams.

“He stated he felt sorry for killing victim and knew he wasn’t God, but he ‘had to do it,’” the probable cause statement said.

According to police, Bible told officers that he met Williams while walking past a bus shelter, where she asked him if he wanted to engage in a sex act.

Bible told officers he agreed but that as Williams performed oral sex on him, he felt “suspicious” of her and shot her in the head, the probable cause statement said.

Bible is set to appear in court on Jan. 9, according to jail records.

At a Thursday press conference, Finke, the first openly trans state legislator to serve in Minnesota, said passing bills is not enough to address what she called the epidemic of anti-trans violence.

Queers are child molesters and shyould be locked away from the general public.
